Before you begin
- This guide is intended for the retail version of Windows 95.
- This guide assumes that your modem is properly installed in Windows
95.
- In some Windows 95 dialog boxes, there are more options than those
specified; leave other options set at their default values.
- Be sure to have your Windows 95 installation software at hand;
it may be required to complete the setup routine.
- During the course of this configuration procedure, you may be
prompted
to restart your computer. In this case, allow the computer to restart,
and continue this procedure in the Control Panel.
- From your desktop, double click on My Computer.
- Next, double click on Control Panel.
NETWORK OPTIONS SETUP
1. Verifying and installing dial-up
networking
- In Control Panel, double click on Add/Remove Programs.
- Select the Windows Setup tab, and double click on Communications.
- If Dial-Up Networking has a check mark in the box to its
left,
then it's already installed. Cancel the two windows and go to Step 2.
- If it isn't checked, select it; you'll need your Windows 95
installation software to install the component.
- Click OK. After the component installs successfully, go to
step 2.
2. Verifying and installing network
protocols
- In Control Panel, double click on Network.
- In the box labeled Installed Network Components, find
Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP. You may see other components
listed, but they can be safely left alone.
- In the box labeled Primary Network Logon, select Client
for Microsoft Networks. If you do not have this protocol listed,
go to step 2c.
- If you do not have Dial-Up Adapter listed, go to step 2a.
- If you do not have TCP/IP listed, go to step 2b.
- If everything looks installed, go to Step 3.
2a. Adding
adapter if not installed
- In the Network window, click on the Add button.
- Double Click on Adapter.
- Single click Microsoft in the Manufacturers list
(left side).
- Find Dial-Up Adapter in the Network Adapter list
(right side), and double click on it.
2b. Adding protocol if not installed
- In the Network window, click on the Add button.
- Double Click on Protocol.
- Single click Microsoft in the Manufacturers list
(left side).
- Find TCP/IP in the Network Protocols list (right
side),
and double click on it.
2c. Adding client if not installed
- In the Network window, click on the Add button.
- Double Click on Client.
- Single click Microsoft in the Manufacturers list
(left side).
- Find Client for Microsoft Networks in the Clients
list (right side), and double click on it.
- Click the Identification tab and enter the information
specified.

3. Configuring TCP/IP settings
NOTE: If you do not have the Windows 95 Installation Software,
please CLICK HERE for alternate
instructions.
- Select TCP/IP and click on the Properties button.
- Under the IP Address tab, select Obtain an IP address
automatically.
- Under the WINS Configuration tab, select Disable WINS
Resolution.
- Under the Gateway tab, leave empty boxes.
- Under the DNS Configuration tab, select Enable DNS.
- In the text box labeled Host, enter your user name.
- In the text box labeled Domain, enter ecpi.com
- Find the DNS Server search order box and type in the Primary
DNS,
which is 216.141.24.3 and click Add.
- Next, type in the Secondary DNS, which is 216.141.24.2 and
click Add.
4. Finishing Network Setup
Click the OK button in the Network window to save the
settings
you just completed, and Windows 95 will ask you to reboot the machine.
Select Yes, and after restarting, proceed to the next section.
SETTING UP THE DIAL-UP ADAPTER
1. Adding a new connection
- Double click on My Computer on the desktop.
- Double click on Dial-Up Networking.
- Double click on Make New Connection.
- In Type a name for the computer you are dialing enter ECPI.
- For Select a modem select the modem you will use to dial
with, and click on Next.
- In Telephone number type in 646-3274, and click on Next
unless you have a 56k modem, in which case you should type in
647-4736, and click on Next.
- Click on Finish.
2. Setting connection properties
- From My Computer, open the Dial-Up Networking window.
- From the Connections drop-down menu, click Settings.
- Select Prompt for Information Before Dialing.
- Click OK.
- Inside the Dial-up Networking window, there will be an icon
labeled ECPI.
This is the connection you created earlier.
- Click on the ECPI connect Icon.
- From the File drop-down menu, select Properties.
- Click on the Server Type button.
- Type of Dial-Up Server should be set to PPP, Windows 95;
Windows NT 3.5 Internet.
- Advanced Options should only have Enable Software
Compression checked.
- Allowed Network Protocols should only have TCP/IP
checked.
- Click on TCP/IP Settings.
- Select Server assigned IP address, Server assigned name server
address,
Use IP header compression, and Use default gateway on remote
network.
- Click OK.
- Under the General tab, click on Configure.
- For Maximum speed, select the next highest speed than the
speed of your
modem. This will ensure optimal operation.
- Select the Connection tab.
- Set Data bits to 8, Parity to None, and Stop
bits to 1.
- Click on Advanced.
- Select Use error control and Compress data.
- Select Use flow control, and select Hardware (RTS/CTS).
Not all modems use the above settings, but most do. If you're unsure,
check your modem installation guide or owner's manual.
- Click OK.
- Select the Options tab.
- Only Display modem status should be checked.
- Click OK and then Click OK again to complete your
setup.
